Island Health has declared the COVID-19 outbreaks over at Chartwell Malaspina Care Residence in Nanaimo and Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.
With the implementation of comprehensive strategies to prevent and respond to COVID-19 in long-term and acute care, there are no longer any COVID-19 cases at either site related to the outbreak.
Chartwell Malaspina Care Residence
Island Health declared an outbreak at Chartwell Malaspina on December 27 after one resident tested positive for COVID-19. In total, seven cases in residents and two cases in staff members were identified related to this outbreak. Sadly, two resident deaths were linked to this outbreak.
Chartwell Malaspina is owned and operated by Chartwell Retirement Residences. The entire team at the home, as well as the Island Health team members who supported the site during the outbreak, should be applauded for their diligence in continuing to provide excellent care while maintaining outbreak precautions for more than five weeks. These were challenging circumstances and all involved are to be commended for their professionalism and compassion.
With the outbreak now declared over, the following will occur at Chartwell Malaspina:
- Social visits will resume on February 4;
- Admissions and transfers will resume;
- Congregate dining will resume, with COVID-19 safety protocols in place;
- Diligent infection prevention measures and appropriate use of personal protective equipment will continue.
Nanaimo Regional General Hospital
The outbreak at NRGH was declared in the east wing of the fourth floor on January 23. In total, two staff members and one patient tested positive related to this outbreak. No other areas of the hospital were affected by this outbreak.
Staff are to be commended for their diligent work in limiting transmission and continuing to provide excellent care during challenging circumstances.
With the outbreak declared over, normal operations will resume on the unit.
