Victoria – Victoria General Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is hosting its 34th annual reunion party for ‘graduates’ of the unit. The NICU reunion party gives families and the staff who cared for these infants the opportunity to reconnect and celebrate the precious lives of these children.
Between 2,500 and 3,500 babies are born in Victoria every year. Nearly 600 of those babies will require care from the highly specialized NICU medical and nursing team.
There are 22 beds in the NICU. The NICU team includes: neonatologists, paediatricians, paediatric surgeons and anesthetists, a paediatric cardiologist, a paediatric neurologist, a Clinical Nurse Leader, a Clinical Nurse Educator, and a Nurse Clinician group leading 4 teams of experienced RN’s. Other members of the multi‐disciplinary team include a clinical pharmacist, occupational therapist, physiotherapist, social worker, and laboratory and support personnel. A team of respiratory therapists provide support 24 hours, 7 days a week and a dedicated group of veteran parents and volunteer huggers also provide support and care to NICU families.
This year’s reunion will be held on Thursday, August 9 from 10 a.m. to noon in the back garden of Children’s Health Foundation of Vancouver Island’s Jeneece Place on the grounds of Victoria General Hospital.
Members of the media are invited to join NICU staff, families and ‘graduates’ at this fun annual event.
