NANAIMO – It’s time to lace up your walking shoes and get active! The annual Walk with your Doc is happening May 12th at Maffeo Sutton Park in Nanaimo at 10 am. This year, Island Health’s Central Island Healthy Lifestyles is marking a milestone – celebrating its fifth anniversary at the event.
Central Island Healthy Lifestyles empowers children and teens from six to 17 years old, and their families, to live their healthiest lifestyle possible by supporting families to make healthy eating and active lifestyle changes.
“We’re getting active as a group to celebrate five great years of working with families in the central Island area,” said Dr. Derek Poteryko, Island Health’s Medical Director of Community Health for Nanaimo. “Anyone who would like to join us can meet us at 10 am on Saturday, May 12th, under the spirit square at Maffeo Sutton Park. Don’t forget your water bottle and your walking shoes!”
Walk with your Doc is a Province-wide campaign to spread the word to British Columbians about the health benefits of daily walking. It is an initiative of the Doctors of BC, the organization representing physicians around the province. This year, the walk is also supported by the Physiotherapy Association of British Columbia (PABC).
To date, more than 200 walks have been organized, with hundreds of health care providers and thousands of people participating.
