Employer Paid Benefits

Island Health offers a comprehensive benefits package, which may very depending on the collective agreement and employment status.

Most packages will include:

Medical Services Plan

B.C. Medical Services Plan provides for the payment of the medically required services of family practitioners, specialists, supplementary health care practitioners and laboratory and diagnostic service providers. Out of province applicants must live in B.C. for three months before they become eligible for coverage under the B.C. Medical Services Plan.

Extended Health

Extended Health Care, including out of country coverage, helps employees pay for specialized services and supplies not provided under the Provincial Medical Services Plan. Prescription drugs, paramedical services, vision care and hospital accommodation differential costs are examples of the services covered under this plan. Subject to some maximums.

Dental

Dental coverage provides payment of costs of basic, restorative and orthodontic services and is subject to some maximums.

Long-term Disability

Long Term Disability provides continuing income in the event of total disability.

Group Life Insurance and Accidental Death & Dismemberment Insurance

Group life insurance provides financial protection to your beneficiary in the event of death while employed with Island Health. Accidental Death & Dismemberment Insurance provides additional financial protection in the event of death or dismemberment while employed with Island Health.

Benefits for Casual Employees

Limited health benefits may be available, on completion of the eligibility requirement of their Collective Agreement. Casual employees under the Nurses & Paramedical Collective Agreements who purchase certain health benefits once eligible, and who work a minimum of 975 hours between October 1 and the following September 30, will received a refund of the premiums paid for those benefits, to a maximum of 12 month’s premium. Casual employees also receive a premium in lieu of vacation and statutory holidays.

Employee & Family Assistance Program (EFAP)

The Employee & Family Assistance Program (EFAP) offers immediate expert help and confidential access to support employees and their families in dealing with work, health or life issues.

Smoking Cessation

This initiative is designed to assist any employee who wishes to stop smoking, by covering the cost of qualifying Nicotine Replacement Therapies. Subject to maximums.
