Preparing for Your Visit

Take a tour of the facility you are attending. Ask questions about medications, billing, meals, visitations, and anything else that is on your mind.

You should also:

  • Be clear about pick up and drop off times.
  • Understand how billing works ahead of time.
  • Complete any paperwork before you arrive.
  • Cancel all community services for the duration of the stay. 
  • Label all client’s personal items (some locations have a labelling service).
  • Check your location’s medication procedure.
  • Be prepared to bring equipment you use at home such as walkers or custom items.
  • Provide an information sheet about the client with some details on what they like and how to support them.
  • Bring favourite photographs, blankets, and snacks to feel at home.
  • Bring books, crosswords, and crafts the client enjoys.
Visitors and Caregivers

During influenza season (typically December-March), to help protect patients from the flu, all visitors will be expected to wear a mask in our facilities if they have not had a flu shot. For more information, please read our Influenza Protection Policy.

Provincial policy requires all visitors to be informed:  "Violence, foul language and abusive behaviours are not acceptable. Verbal threats or acts of violence will not be tolerated and may result in removal from this facility and/or prosecution."

Motorized Scooter Policy

The facility can allow power wheelchairs, but an occupational therapist is required to review that the power wheelchair can be used safely in the building. The facility can also approve scooters if they can be parked outside Woodland/Coastal and the client can safely and independently transfer on/off.

Pet Policy

As per Island Health policy. Visiting pets are encouraged and welcome on a leash. They should be parasite-free and up-to-date on shots. Pets are not allowed in areas where food is prepared or served.

Smoking Policy

Smoking is permitted for Woodland clients only. Smoking is not permitted at Coastal or Homestead units.

Safety/Security Features

No unit security at Woodland or Coastal units. Fully secure at Homestead unit.

Any Other Amenities

Medications: All medications are dispensed through Cumberland Lodge Pharmacy. Medications administered by facility staff.

Laundry service: Staff will launder the client’s clothes, but all clothing must be labelled prior to the client’s visit.
