Brain, Nerves & Strokes

Brain Nerves Strokes

Neurosciences Health works to prevent, diagnose and treat diseases of the brain, spinal cord, nerve and muscle for people living in Island Health's service area.

Our Mission & Commitment

To provide timely, client-centered care to patients throughout the Vancouver Island Health Authority region to prevent, diagnose and treat diseases of the brain, spinal cord, nerve and muscle.

Our Approach

Our focus is on reintegrating clients into the community.  We take into account individual emotional, physical, and lifestyle needs and liaise with the Rehabilitation Medicine Department.

Most of our clients are able to access care on Vancouver Island with specialized inpatient services offered through Victoria General Hospital.

For complex cases (patients requiring complex spinal rehabilitation and complex neurosurgical services), we work closely with the G.F. Strong Hospital and the Vancouver General Hospital.

Academic Affiliations

Teaching future generations of physicians and specialists is a priority with the Department of Neurosciences:

  • the department is a teaching venue for the Island Medical Program
  • patients going through the inpatient/outpatient neurology services may encounter 3rd  and 4th year medical students
  • the Division of Neurosurgery offers Fellowship positions where trained neurosurgeons gain further subspecialized neurosurgical experience
  • the Division of Neurology serves as a community rotation for 4th year residents from the University of British Columbia Neurology program
