Pulmonary function testing measures the function of lung capacity and lung and chest wall mechanics to determine whether or not the patient has a lung problem.
Pulmonary testing can be used to assess how a patient is responding to different medications, the amount of air your lungs can hold, how quickly you move the air in and out, or how well your lungs can transfer oxygen from the air into your blood.
These tests may also be performed prior to surgery to make sure you will not be hindered by reduced lung capacity.
While breathing through a tube connected to a recording machine, the patient takes a deep breath in and blows out as quickly as possible. The results are recorded and analyzed. The tests can be performed before and after the use of medications.
