Title: Spirituality and Health
Date: Friday, February 28th, 2025
Time: 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Presenter: Darren Colyn is the manager of Island Health’s Spiritual Health program which consists of 10 Spiritual Health Practitioners located at 8 hospitals across the island. For a decade prior to this management role Darren served as the Spiritual Health Practitioner at the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. Darren is passionate about the vital, caring work that his team provides to patients, families and staff helping them navigate health care and workplace challenges.
Session Description: This presentation will explore:
- Differentiating between spirituality and religion
- Understanding spirituality as a determinant of health
- Embracing spirituality to increase physical and mental wellbeing

March 2025 Sessions
Title: Healthy Living - Healthy Heart
Date: Monday, March 3rd, 2025
Time: 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Presenter: Sandy is a Kinesiologist from University of Waterloo, an RN, and an ACSM Exercise Specialist. She has specialized in orthopeadics, emergency and cardiology and has over 30 years of experience working in cardiac rehab. She loves to teach and has developed and taught numerous cardiac rehab courses. Sandy currently teaches a Cardiac Rehab course with BCIT works and as the Team Leader / Instructor in the Take Heart & Breathe Well Program at Saanich Commonwealth Place. She is a firm believer in the benefits of regular moderate exercise to decrease all causes of ‘dis-ease’. Sandy lives in Victoria and usually prefers to be kite flying or kayaking.
Session Description: This session will briefly review the workings of the heart, common medical problems that can occur and how you can assist your heart by living actively. Regular moderate exercise can assist you in reducing the effects of almost all chronic diseases and heart disease is no exception. And it doesn’t involve buying a gym membership!

Title: Pen to Paper - Introduction to Intensive Journal Program
Date: Friday, March 7th, 2025
Time: 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Presenter: Bill Israel, Certified Facilitator, the Intensive Journal ® writing method since 2016 with coordinating and facilitating programs around Greater Victoria such as, Family Caregivers of BC, The Umbrella Society and The New Roads Therapeutic Recover Community (Our Place Society).
Session Description: Everyone is welcome to attend this introductory session about the Intensive Journal Program, developed by world renowned, Dr. Ira Progoff PhD (1927-1998) in collaboration with Dr. Carl Jung. You will have the opportunity to:
- Learn about the background of the Intensive Journal program
- Practice some writing using prompts from the Intensive Journal program – (you do not need to be a writer to participate in this experiential workshop)
- Ask questions

Title: Eating Healthy on a Budget
Date: Monday, March 24th, 2025
Time: 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Presenter: Nadine Bartels, interim Public Health Registered Dietitian for the Greater Victoria Area with Island Health, combines her love for food with a passion for empowering others to build a healthy relationship with eating. She is interested in helping support healthy eating across the lifespan and is very fortunate to be able to share her knowledge with a variety of audiences, including youth, young parents, older adults, and other health care professionals. In her spare time, she enjoys hiking, crocheting, and playing with her two cats.
Session Description: Join this interactive presentation to learn practical tips that can help you get nutritious foods while staying within a budget. We will discuss the following topics:
- What does eat well mean and why is it important for older adults?
- Food costs and other challenges to eating on a budget
- Getting the most for your dollar when buying groceries
- Affordable meal planning and preparation
- And learn about what community food resources exist that can help you
