Building Description

The main building is two storeys and includes 80 complex care rooms, three cottages of 10 rooms each, and 40 independent living suites. The complex care rooms are all private with three-piece en-suite.

The independent living suites are one-bedroom suites which include a kitchen and dinette area with fridge and stove. Surrounding grounds are landscaped and accessible.

The three cottages on the property are exclusively for the care of residents with Alzheimer-type dementia. Each resident in the cottages has a private bedroom, with shared bathrooms. Each cottage has a kitchen and dining area where all meals are served, living room space and a secure outdoor area that is accessible from the living area

The building features many amenities and services. 

The building features many amenities and services. In complex care each 20 bed living area has two lounges and dining room in close proximity. On the first floor there are enclosed courtyards and on the second there is access to several outdoor balconies. In the independent living area there is are lounge areas on both floors, a comfortable dining room, laundry facilities, an accessible tub and access to both outdoor courtyards and balconies. Shared common space in the building includes a chapel, multipurpose activity room, rehabilitation room, and hair salon.

Neighbourhood/Community Amenities

Located in south Nanaimo, Wexford Creek is walking distance from a small shopping area that includes a grocery store, pharmacy, and several restaurants and coffee shops. There is a medical clinic, dental clinic and laboratory service in the shopping area. The building is serviced by both regular transit and accessible transit services.

Language, Culture or Religious Affiliation

Church services are regularly scheduled with community pastors or priests presiding. Park Place has no religious affiliation.

This facility has a core physician model for medical care.  Residents are assigned to a physician who has a number of other residents at the facility, attends on a regular basis, coordinates care with other core physicians and works closely with care staff at the facility

Special Recreational Opportunities

Programs are offered on an individual, small and large group basis and include activities such as exercises, ceramics, music programs, bingo, baking and many more. Family and friends are encouraged to join in activities and outings.

Motorized Scooter Policy

Motorized scooters are allowed if the client can safely operate the scooter.

 

Pet Policy

As per Island Health pet policy. Visiting pets are encouraged and welcome on a leash. They should be parasite-free and up-to-date on shots.  Pets are not allowed in areas were food is prepared or served.

Smoking Policy

As a health care provider, Island Health has an obligation to promote good health practices. We are committed to ensuring a safe, healthy and clean environment for everyone. No smoking and vaping permitted on any Island Health property. This includes all buildings, grounds and parking lots.

Residents who smoke are required to do so independently or with a personal companion in designated areas off the care home property.

Main building exits and stairwells are alarmed or secured. Outside doors to the centre are locked at night with access to the building controlled by staff and obtained by ringing a doorbell. Cottages are secured 24/7. Access is controlled by staff and is gained by ringing a doorbell.

Spiritual care provided by the resident’s church or community of faith, as they have arranged.

Parking is free, but limited. Accessible spaces are available.

Provincial policy requires all visitors to be informed:  "Violence, foul language and abusive behaviours are not acceptable. Verbal threats or acts of violence will not be tolerated and may result in removal from this facility and/or prosecution."
