Building Description

The original New Horizons three-storey home was built in 2008 and a new addition was welcomed to the facility in 2017 to provide a total of 102,509 square feet. The facility is nestled among a variety of affordable seniors and supportive housing and is close to Ironwood Place, a 54 unit assisted living and adult day program complex.

New Horizons is an active part of a thriving neighbourhood which functions as a community of care where seniors can age in place. Features of New Horizons include a bright, open design with social and activity areas, beautifully landscaped gardens, a hair salon, a mobile tuck shop, and a multi-sensory room. Consultations with a dental hygienist, a physiotherapist and an occupational therapist are also available.

Building Amenities

The 148 beds of the facility are organized as follows:

  • 20 beds for dementia clients such as those living with Alzheimer's disease
  • six beds for geriatric mental health clients in special care secure units
  • 100 Island Health-funded beds for general complex care clients
  • 22 private pay beds for complex care clients

The dementia secure care unit has an open floor design which promotes the opportunity of residents to safely wander and mobilize in a social, friendly environment. The second and third floors have 32 units each, with two double rooms to accommodate couples aging together. A unique aspect of the facility is its children's daycare centre. Multigenerational social interaction is supported through story time and interactive play. Garden areas decorate the perimeter of the building.

Neighbourhood/Community Amenities

New Horizons Community of Care is nestled in the heart of the community surrounded by residential and commercial neighbourhoods. Within walking distance to Discovery Mall, Campbell River Common and Maritime Shopping Centre. Interconnected to the city through excellent pedestrian walkways, bus service, handy-dart and the New Horizons Care bus. Adjacent to several seniors’ independent living apartments and Ironwood Place Assisted Living Facility.

Philosophy of Care

As one of many seniors' residences owned and operated by Park Place Seniors Living throughout B.C. and Alberta, we practice the company's 'resident-first' care philosophy which promotes individualized care for each resident.

New Horizons Community of Care combines several philosophies of care to make it home. Some of these include the Eden Alternative which focuses on living and continued growth and Gentle Care Dementia. However, you will hear us say more often “We simply take care of Moms and Dads, Grandmas & Grandpas just like they were our own.” and “We don’t just admit a resident to our home, it’s a family package.” We take a person centred care approach – focusing on each individual and their needs and interests.

As a Park Place Seniors Living home, New Horizons also follows the company-wide Resident’s Day philosophy, in which incoming residents are asked how they wish to live in the home. The responses become an individualized schedule for that resident, which is implemented by the care team.
