Building Description

Built in 1977 and located in the hub of the Village of Cumberland, just a few blocks to downtown area, fire hall and ambulance station. Built on 3.82 acres. 

Building Amenities

Cumberland Lodge is comprised of three units named Ambleside, Union, and the Beaufort Unit (Special Care Unit). All units have access to a our on-site kitchen, dining room, family/lounge area, baking/recreation room as well as an outdoor patio and courtyard area.

On-site personal laundry services are provided Monday to Friday and we also have a hair salon for our residents and community members to access Monday to Friday. In the attached Health Center you can access your Pharmacy needs, Renal Dialysis Unit, Health Center Library, and Island Health community laboratory.

Facility-Specific Restrictions

Residents are not permitted to use motorized scooters or electric wheel chairs within the facility.

Neighbourhood/Community Amenities

The Comox Valley, with a population of 62,326, is a community located on the east coast of Vancouver Island that includes the city of Courtenay, the town of Comox, the village of Cumberland, and the unincorporated settlements of Royston, Union Bay, Fanny Bay, Black Creek and Merville.

The Comox Valley has direct access to key amenities including an international airport, mainland ferry terminal, a regional hospital, an excellent sea harbour, a regional post-secondary college, a large ski resort, and countless other tourism attractions. 

The Valley is home to Canadian Forces Base 19 Wing Comox, Canada's only air force base on the West Coast and the closest Canadian International Airport to Asia with air cargo capabilities.

The Comox Valley also provides access to remote Islands by ferry as well as endless nature trails and lakes.

Religious services are offered for those who wish to participate and specific requests may be arranged as desired. Every effort is made to recognize and/or celebrate all languages, cultures, and religious events of significance to our residents.

As per Island Health Vision, Purpose and Values. Our philosophy is to provide the highest standards of care to our residents and to ensure their right to care and information, respect and dignity, justice, autonomy and right to choose is supported and upheld.

Model of Medical Care/Physician Organization  
Any resident GP may continue caring for the residents upon admission. If the GP chooses not to follow the resident to facility they will be assigned to one of three facility physicians who frequently attend the site and our residents weekly. One of these physicians includes our medical Director.

Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD)

Type of Accommodation

Main Nursing Unit: Unit has 13 single occupancy rooms and 13 double occupancy rooms. Each room has a private bathroom.

Special Care Unit: Unit has 26 single occupancy rooms each with a private bathroom.

There is one single occupancy respite room with a private bathroom.

Cost

Special Recreational Opportunities

Residents are encouraged to participate in any of the recreational programs provided. Activities are planned to meet the emotional, physical, cognitive, and social needs of the residents such as crafting, hobbies, games, sports, cultural interests, religious interests, music, gardening, literature, drama, art, pets and family involvement. 

Outings are planned to give residents the opportunity to go out for meals, provide opportunities for shopping, drives, and to attend community events. Cumberland Lodge has its very own wheelchair-accessible van to provide transportation.

Many local talent visit the Lodge frequently and provide much ongoing entertainment for our residents. Volunteers are also always welcome and play a vital role in assisting in providing resident experiences.
 

Accessibility

The front entrances of the building are at ground level and doors have been equipped with push buttons for automatic doors. Where entrances are not at ground level, sturdy ramps are in place for wheel chair access.

Motorized Scooter Policy

Residents are not permitted to use motorized scooters or electric wheelchairs within the facility.

Pet Policy

As per Island Health policy.

Pets are not permitted to live in Cumberland Lodge.  Visiting pets are welcome and must be leashed at all times, have current vaccinations and be well mannered.  No pets are permitted in any area were food is prepared or served.

Smoking Policy

For residents who smoke there is a specific gazebo provided that has lighting, heating, shade and an emergency call bell.  Residents must be able to transport themselves in and out of the smoking gazebo and smoke independently

Parking

There is plenty of parking available onsite and accessible parking as well. Access to the Beaufort Unit is available by parking in the back fenced parking lot and entering up the ramp to the main doorway. There is no fee for parking.

During influenza season (typically December-March), to help protect patients from the flu, all visitors will be expected to wear a mask in our facilities if they have not had a flu shot. For more information, please read our Influenza Protection Policy.

Provincial policy requires all visitors to be informed:  "Violence, foul language and abusive behaviours are not acceptable. Verbal threats or acts of violence will not be tolerated and may result in removal from this facility and/or prosecution."
