Building Description
Constructed in 2007, this 101 bed multi-level care facility is built to the latest standards. It sits on a relatively flat property of 2.5 acres. It is well treed at the front with magnificent views over the Ladysmith area including the ocean.The building is constructed of concrete and has many other safety and security features. It is three storeys high at the front entrance and one storey below grade respecting the typography of the area.
Building Amenities
The facility residential areas are divided into smaller communities for more intimate living. The interior design while being contemporary has been described as non-institutional and very appealing.
There is provision for public and private space along with generous lounge areas. A hair salon is located in the facility. There are spas on each floor for residents who prefer bathing to showers.
Neighbourhood/Community Amenities
Ladysmith provides wonderful recreation opportunities; it has a lovely and charming city centre; and very close to Nanaimo while still having a myriad of health and other services in Ladysmith for the residents living in the community.
Oyster Harbour is adjacent to the ambulance station as well as the Ladysmith Community Health Centre. Residents and their family can enjoy Old Town Bakery and many other local restaurant options in Ladysmith.

All employees are expected to be fully able to communicate in English (orally and in writing). Most residents have English as their primary language.

Model of Medical Care/Physician Organization
This facility operates a TORCH (Towards Optimal Residential Care Health) Model / Long-Term Care Initiative (LTCI) model for medical care. Residents are assigned to a physician who attends the facility weekly and works in a shared care model, working closely with other TORCH / LTCI physicians and facility health care staff.

All rooms at Oyster Harbour have their own bathroom with a Spa located on every floor. Rooms are designed to be fully handicap accessible and have provision for overhead lifts for those residents who are in need of assistance. Rooms are generously sized with lovely views.

Special Recreational Opportunities
Social activities at Oyster Harbour include happy hour, birthday parties with entertainment, lunch and a movie, Bingo, daily exercise programs, pet therapy, recreational games and activities. Residents have opportunities to participate in walking outings, community bingo and church services. Motorized scooters or wheelchairs are assessed on a case by case basis by Oyster Harbour.
Pet Policy
As per Island Health pet policy. Visiting pets are encouraged and welcome on a leash. They should be parasite-free and up-to-date on shots. Pets are not allowed in areas were food is prepared or served.
Smoking Policy
Oyster Harbour is a non-smoking building with provision for smokers to indulge in designate outside areas. Residents wishing to smoke must do so independently or with a chaperone.
As a health care provider, Island Health has an obligation to promote good health practices. We are committed to ensuring a safe, healthy and clean environment for everyone. No smoking and vaping permitted on any Island Health property. This includes all buildings, grounds and parking lots.

Any Other Amenities
There is a Special Geriatric Mental Health Centre within the Lodge for individuals with severe dementia. Recreation activities are provided to the 12 residents of the Mental Health Unit encompassing a holistic approach addressing individual and group needs on the unit.
