Island Health participates in social media networks (e.g. Instagram, X, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, etc.) to reach and engage with our community. Read on to learn more about some examples of how we interact with the information shared with us on social media, a community moderation policy, and monitoring of our channels.

Facebook 

Island Health uses Facebook to share information about our health services, programs, locations, public health notices, and news about our organization with those who are interested in, and could benefit from this information. You can follow, and/or like us on Facebook @VanIslandHealth.

Facebook Analytics

Island Health may use Facebook analytics to collect data on how often, and when, links are clicked on and posts are viewed. Facebook analytics also collects information on the geographical locations of its users. Learn more about this at Facebook's Data Policy.

Privacy

To protect your own privacy and the privacy of others, please do not include any personal information including medical information, phone numbers and email addresses in the body of your Facebook comment. Please do not share personal information about others, including in pictures, without their consent.

Monitoring

We monitor the Island Health Facebook feed during regular hours of operation, usually between Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Complaints or concerns 

If you have a concern or complaint about care that you have received, please speak with a manager responsible for the service or program involved. If that is not possible, you can contact the Patient Care Quality Office

Retweets, Quotes, and Likes

If we retweet (RT), quote, or like a tweet from another X user, it does not imply endorsement on the part of Island Health of the product, service, or individual who posted that tweet. We may like, retweet or quote news, links and resources, or points of view we believe are relevant to the work we do. A like, RT or quote is not equal to an endorsement of a position or argument.

Follows

If we decide to follow an X user, this does not equal endorsement of a product, service, or individual.

Analytics

Island Health may collect data from analytics provided by X to determine how often, where, and when our posts are viewed, shared, and commented on. You can read more about collection and use of data at X's privacy policy.

How we protect and use information we collect

Island Health's collection, use, disclosure, and retention of information comply with the provisions of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. Collected information is used only by authorized Island Health staff to fulfill the purpose for which it was originally collected.

We will not sell or trade any personally identifiable information that may be collected from our website and will not disclose such information to third parties except as authorized by law.

Moderation policy

To keep social media conversation respectful, relevant, and appropriate, and maintain an inclusive and welcoming experience, Island Health will take appropriate actions that can result in individuals and/or content being blocked, deleted, and/or reported.

Examples of behaviour and content that can result in these actions include:

  • Offensive, profane, hateful, insulting, rude, abusive, aggressive, violent, obscene, explicit, pornographic or sexual comments; 
  • Content that promotes, fosters or perpetuates discrimination on the basis of race, national or ethnic origin, age, creed, gender, marital status, socio-economic status, physical or mental disability, or sexual orientation; 
  • Personal attacks and/or defamatory statements; 
  • Serious, unproven, unsupported, or inaccurate accusations; 
  • Messages for advertising/marketing purposes; 
  • Messages that conduct or encourage illegal activity; 
  • Information that could compromise public safety, security or operations; 
  • Messages that impersonate or misrepresent someone else; 
  • Comments that include potentially harmful misinformation or disinformation; 
  • Comments containing spam or posted by anonymous or robot accounts; and, 
  • Incoherent messages.
