The Cowichan Valley Wellness and Recovery Centre (the Centre) at 5878 York Road in North Cowichan will offer a holistic approach to mental health and substance use through prevention, treatment and recovery services when it opens in mid fall 2021. The Centre will be co-operated by Island Health in partnership with Lookout Housing and Health Society.
In April and May 2021, Island Health and Lookout hosted a series of community dialogues and information sessions, virtually, with key stakeholders. The aims of these conversations were to:
- Hold discussions about and build awareness of the role the Wellness and Recovery Centre will play in saving lives and supporting people’s health and well-being.
- Hold discussions about the collective response to the public health/toxic drug supply (opioid) crisis that includes healthcare providers, service providers, all levels of governments, Indigenous Organizations and People and community leaders and individual people.
The community dialogues provided stakeholders and the community with information about the project and gave community members an opportunity to provide feedback on the project. A Centre Fact Sheet provides information about the project and its services.
While the engagement sessions have now concluded, Island Health and Lookout are committed to ongoing community dialogue. Comments can be submitted to Island Health via CVWRC@islandhealth.ca. As discussed during the community dialogues, a Community Advisory Committee is being established with a range of stakeholders being invited to participate as members via an application process. The Community Advisory Committee will begin meeting in September 2021.
